Abstract

Introduction: Families of patients with low consciousness have an important role in supporting patients and should acquire necessary empowerments for patient care.
Objective: This study aimed to examine the effect of family-centered interventions on self-efficacy of family of patients in the intensive care unit.
Materials and Methods: This was a randomized clinical trial with pre and post design which was conducted in the intensive care units of hospitals in Khorram-Abad ,Iran in 2019-2020. 70 family members of patients were selected by convenience sampling and were assigned into the intervention (n=28) and control (n=28) groups by stratified random blocks. Data were collected by Self-efficacy questionnaire and also Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Intervention was carried out using family-centered model. Collected data were analyzed using the statistical tests of chi square, independent t-test and paired t-test. Also, the generalized linear model (GLM) were used in order to compare changes in self-efficacy scores of the two groups of study, with adjusting of demographic, anxiety and depression variables.
Results: Analysis of data showed that most of subjects were male (53.8%) with mean age 38.15± 8.68. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the mean scores of self-efficacy, anxiety and depression in the intervention and control groups (p<0.001). The intervention increased the mean score of caregivers’ self-efficacy (40.14 ± 14.35) significantly (p<0.001) in the intervention group. The results showed that, self- efficacy mean score of intervention group was 36 units higher than caregivers' self-efficacy 0f control group (CI95% ; 20.6- 51.4,P = 0.028).
Conclusion: Participation of family members of patients with low consciousness in care of patient in the intensive care unit. have an effective role in self-efficacy of caregivers of these patients.
