Abstract
Introduction: The need for innovative teaching strategy is becoming an urge need for nursing education systems.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Jigsaw cooperative learning strategy on opinion and achievement among nursing students.
Materials and Methods: This is a randomized controlled study. The sample consisted of 160 nursing students whom randomly selected and assigned to intervention (80 students formed of eight groups of 10 students each) and the control group (80 students formed of eight groups of 10 students each). Data collected over two times after intervention. Self-administered questionnaire used to collect data in relation to academic achievement and opinion regarding the Jigsaw Cooperative Learning Strategy (only for intervention group). Chi 2 test and Repeated measure ANOVA used data analyzing.
Results: The mean age of the experimental group was 20.8 +0.74 years while the control groups  was 20.7 + 0.81years old.There is a significant over time difference in mean scores of academic achievement between control and intervention group (p= 0.001) based on repeated measure ANOVA, and a significant difference between the two groups over time  and group effect by using repeated measure ANOVA (p = 0.001).Paired t-test showed a significant difference between students' academic performance in time-I and time-II (p < .05). In the control group, the descriptive statistics show that mean score of students’ AA (time I) was the little higher in post-test (time I) and dropped a little in time II. Paired t-test showed a non-significant difference between students' academic performance in time-II and I (p > .05).
Conclusions: The results indicated the significant need for using novel nursing education models in nursing education to enhance learning outcomes in training settings.
