آرزوئی که بشر طی قرنهای متوالی برای درمان بیماریها با خون داشته است، باعث بنای پایه های دانش نوینی بنام انتقال خون گردیده است. امروزه بکار بردن خون خالص و مشتقات آن در درمان بیماران به صورت امری متداول در آمده است. و این در حالی است که از بدو زندگی غارنشینی، خون برای بشر اسرار آمیز بوده و نیروی زندگی و مفرح روح محسوب می شده است . پزشکان مصر قدیم چون به ارزش خون پی برده بودند برای بهبود بیماران و تقویت پیران استحمام با خون را توصیه می کردند و در قرن وسطی پزشکان خوردن خون را به بیماران خود تجویز می نمودند.
