امروزه با کاهش مرگ و میر و تغییرات اساسی در ساختار سنتی جمعیت، افزایش سالمندان چشمگیر می باشد. توجه به بهداشت سالمندان که بخش پرارزش منابع انسانی را تشکیل می دهند، بسیار مهم است. بنابراین جا دارد متخصصین بهداشتی که مراقبت از زنان را بر عهده دارند جهت ارائه مراقبتهای کامل تغییرات پیچیده جسمی و روانی ناشی از یائسگی را کاملا بشناسند.
