Assessment of the correlation between lifestyle and quality of sleep in elderly who referred to retirement center in RASHT, 2007

Abstract:

Introduction: Survey about the issues and problems related to elderly in order to improve their quality of life of this increasing population has become a universal concern. Even though aging is a natural process but many effective factors such as life style, rest and sleep pattern, stresses and confronting them can affect this process. Identifying the effective factors is necessary for improving elderly quality of life.

Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between life style and quality of sleep in elderly who refer to retirement center.

Results: Research findings showed a significant relation between life style and quality of sleep in samples in ages 65-70(P<0.033), more than 70 years old (P<0.001), males (P<0.012), females(P<0.007), married samples(P<0.014), unmarried samples (P<0.019), education less than diploma(P<0.001), samples without a second occupation(P<0.02), less than 4 family members(P<0.001). Personal housing (P<0.004), separate bedroom (P<0.01), retired from social security (p<0.008), retired from medical universities (P<0.06) and presence of pain (P<0.003) and pain during day (P<0.012).

Conclusions: In attention to above findings, it can be concluded that elderly can improve their quality of sleep by changing and correcting their behavioral factors such as diet, activity and rest, smoking and …
